Sheffield is the town that turned itself into an art gallery. In 1986, after years of economic decline, the townsfolk were desperate for a way forward. They held a public meeting and one bright spark suggested lining the streets with murals. Sheffield is now so popular they hold a Mural Fest in April each year to unveil new works, when over 120,000 tourists beat a path to its door. The town has earned the title ‘ Tasmania’s Outdoor Gallery’. It’s a sight to see. Sheffield sits on the doorstep of rugged Mount Roland, so the surrounding green rolling hills and lush grazing land meet the edge of this magnificent mountain. One inspiring dairy farmer, Des Brown, took a good look around at his idyllic locale – he has the best views from his property – and decided to share them. He now offers accommodation at his Eagles Nest, and it’s not just a place to lay your head but an absolute experience. The lifestyle, the landscape, the luxury – I’d describe this private retreat as hip meets homespun. It has all the mod cons, yet the fittings were built with old classic dairy equipment. Let me explain: the bedheads are made from an old milking machine, and the wonderful table outside is the tractor wheel it looks like. Oh, and you can sample the world’s best sofa; it revolves 360 degrees, offering maximun exposure to the views. That Des sure is amazing. Everything about his retreat is inspired; it’s kinda quirky and it works. A perfect match for the town of Sheffield. |
